WRITING ON this evening, sustainability expert Anne B Ryan argues that our culture is suffering from a waste epidemic.

She argues that because we equate shopping with pleasure, we prefer to buy cheap, disposable items – then simply replace them when a fault develops, rather than repairing. We’d rather be constant consumers than mindful users.

But the result of this is that we may be spending our hard-earned money unwisely when we need it most.
