Calm down - Gerald Fleming says we're not getting a heatwave

It will be fairly warm but we’re talking sweaty sheets more than tan lines…

YOU KNOW THAT brilliant heatwave next week you’ve been looking forward to? Well, forget about it.

Gerald Fleming, former weatherman and head of forecasting at Met Éireann dashed our hopes of a proper summer on RTÉ radio this morning.

He started off with a nice little crack about not everyone in Ireland being excited about heatwaves because of our pastey skin. Grand, we like jokes.

Then he told us we can expect some “warm and humid weather, certainly towards the end of the coming week, say Thursday, Friday”. Lovely Gerald, tell us more.

I wouldn’t classify it as a heatwave.

Fleming explained that high pressure over Scandinavia and low pressure over the Atlantic brings a lot of humid air our way. Our neighbours in Britain are likely to get temperatures reaching 32 degrees, which he said is a real heatwave.

Meanwhile, we can look forward to temperatures closer to 25 degrees if we are lucky. Even at that, it will be mostly humidity rather than sunshine for the Irish. “A few thundery showers” are also likely and the nights in particular will be “sticky” and uncomfortable.

Oh well, as our favourite weatherman said this morning;

You win some you lose some.
