Gardaí are currently appealing for both drivers and motorcyclists to avoid similar scenes, following a spike in the number of motorcyclists killed on Irish roads in 2013.

Of the 22 motorcyclists killed in 2013 that gardaí had home addresses for, 16 were close to their homes and the majority were killed on dry roads in good weather.

The vast majority, 26 of 27, of those killed on motorbikes were male, while one third were aged between 20 and 30.
