Bored of your bedroom? 6 high street buys to transform your sleeping space for under €30

How to bring new life to your bedroom this year – and leave yourself plenty of change from a fifty.

FROM YOUR STYLE of haircut to your decor at home, it’s about that time of year where we tend to crave a change.

Maybe it’s the January lethargy finally leaving us or the fact that spring flowers will soon be peeking their heads above the soil; whatever it is, the need for something fresh is always strong in February.

Today we are honing in on your place of slumber and tranquility: the bedroom.

How can you update your decor here in ways that will satisfy your itch for change without breaking the bank? How can you change the look and feel of your bedroom without getting your hands dirty with DIY?

Very simply, in fact, with a few small additions and swaps that might seem inconsequential, yet hold the power to transform the space entirely.

1. Bring the space to life with this beaded metal planter, €23.50, Oliver Bonas

Now that the days are getting longer, your bedroom should have more natural daylight, meaning a house plant has a far better chance of surviving. Nothing adds instant energy and literal life to a space quite like a plant. What’s more, they add natural colour that complements any style of decor, and they also serve to clean your bedroom air, lifting away any staleness.

If floor space is limited, opt for a hanging planter with something that naturally trails over the edges. Position it in a bedroom corner, as long as it’s one that gets light. One of the latest additions to Irish high street interiors scene is Oliver Bonas. Their metal hanging planters are fresh, chic and delightfully affordable.

2. Add texture and warmth with this round jute rug, €19.99, H&M Home

A simple jute rug affords an instant texture update for your home. Without the need for painting your walls, a rug swap can take you from luxe glam to laid back boho vibes in a matter of moments – or whichever decor direction you wish to go in. Rugs are incredibly useful not just for governing the room’s style, but for helping to zone areas within the room too, such as adding a round jute rug under your dressing table.

You could also consider adding a runner rug beside your bed for comfort and freshness. If you already have a rug, change the texture for a different vibe. Check out H&M online for gorgeous options under €30.

3. Make a statement with this metallic grey/gold lampshade, €30, Woodies

A pendant lampshade in the centre of your bedroom has transformative powers equal to those of a rug – and these days, with so many high street brands offering affordable shades, lighting is no longer the expensive accessory it once was.

This velvet lamp with a metallic sheen inside makes a powerful statement. The great thing about shades is you can swap them without needing a new fitting. You can even swap the shade on your bedside lamp, keeping the base, if you make sure to buy a shade that will fit.

4. Take back your floor using this hanging shoe organiser with 16 pockets, €6, Ikea

Something that can really dampen the aesthetic you’re after is clutter. Sometimes it’s not about adding more statement pieces to your bedroom but paring back what’s there. Simple hooks on the back of doors (the ones that sit over the top of the door and don’t even require drilling) can take dressing gowns off your floors.

Shoe hangers with multiple compartments, hidden in your wardrobe, can further free up floor space and are essential to any bedroom. To revive a space and inject it with energy, a clear-out is always wise. Ikea is your best bet for cheap and cheerful solutions that allow you to take back your bedroom.

5. Bring the decor together with this botanical print, €14, Fy!

Thanks to online brands such as Desenio and Fy!, getting your hands on wall prints is something you can do from the click of your mouse. Whether you go for word art, animal themed prints, botanical prints such as this one or a complete gallery wall or one statement piece that hangs above your bed, rely on affordable art to bring your whole look together.

It can be as simple as picking up a particular colour and finding that across a series of prints that can completely change up your space. Picture ledges are ideal for stacking multiple prints in a neat fashion but consider adding large prints that stand against the wall on the floor or on top of your dresser. Effortlessly cool.

6. Freshen up your bed with this textured scatter cushion, €8, Penneys

When it comes to your bed, the most impactful thing about it will always be the bedding and the accessories you add to it.

The headboard and the bed frame is in the background so there’s no need to swap these out if a quick freshen up is all you’re after. Going from an all white set of bed linen to something dark and moody will provide a change.

To keep things affordable, try adding new contrasting pillow cases that sit behind your top pillows, adding depth. A statement cushion or a throw across the end of the bed will further dictate the tone of decor. Add a touch of luxury with these keepers from Penneys.
