Poll: Should Higher Level Maths be a requirement to become a primary school teacher?

The Education Minister said he wants this to be the case, but is it necessary?

MINISTER FOR EDUCATION Ruairi Quinn says he wants Higher Level Leaving Certificate Maths to become a minimum requirement for entry into primary school teacher training.

Currently the only subject that must be sat at higher level is Irish. Quinn believes this leads to future teachers dropping to Ordinary Level Maths for the Leaving Cert.
