SUSSEX POLICE ARE investigating an incident in which someone set a homeless man’s sleeping bag on fire.

The incident occurred in Brighton on Monday morning at about 2am. The fire service was first called to a report of some burning cardboard in the doorway of a shop.

A man later called for an ambulance, telling the operator he had burns to his legs and feet after he woke up to his sleeping bag on fire.

The 39-year-old man had run off when he woke up on fire but later called the ambulance. He was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries.

Detective Sergeant James Meanwell described it as “a nasty assault” on a homeless man while he was sleeping. He appealed for anyone with information to contact police.
