EMERGENCY SERVICES TOOK part in a large-scale search last night after receiving reports of a person in difficulty off the coast of Howth, Co Dublin.

A passerby contacted the Coast Guard after he reported witnessing a person in difficulty in the water near Sutton Dingy Club at 11pm last night.

A Coast Guard helicopter, a Coast Guard search team from Howth, the RNLI inshore lifeboats from Howth and Dún Laoghaire and local gardaí responded to the call and began search efforts.

The search, involving over 40 personnel, was carried out across the area with particular focus on a stretch between Dollymount Beach and Sutton.

Search teams returned for a low water search this morning at 3.30am. Coast Guard personnel searched the shallow waters in the area where the person was last seen.

The team was stood down at 5.30am this morning, and resumed again at 4pm.

Gardaí are investigating further.
