"The water has frozen my brain": The ice bucket challenge came to Kildare St and the Mansion House today

A TD, a senator and the Lord Mayor all took the plunge in Dublin today. Somehow they all managed to stick to parliamentary language, post-deluge….

YOU COULDN’T MOVE in Dublin city centre this afternoon for politicians pouring cold water over each other.

In fact, so many TDs are getting involved in the charity craze by now, it’s probably fair to say the viral campaign has reached saturation point (sorry).

First up, one block over from Leinster House, was Lord Mayor Christy Burke — who insisted it was nothing out of the ordinary as far as his day’s work was concerned.

“I generally have a cold shower most mornings,” a damp-looking Burke told reporters at the Mansion House.

This afternoon’s drenching may have been a little cooler than he was expecting… but it was all in a very good cause — as kids taking part in the Light It Up Gold Campaign for childhood cancer awareness drenched the city’s first citizen with buckets and tiny watering cans.

Minutes later, outside Leinster House, Fianna Fáil senator Averil Power and Independent Finian McGrath were next up to take the plunge.

Their charity effort had to take place on the pavement outside the Dáil, on Kildare Street. Oireachtas rules probably don’t allow the drenching of politicians within the grounds, and if they made an exception today, sure where would it end?…

Fianna Fáíl leader Micheál Martin was one of Power’s nominees for the challenge, but she may well be in hot water with her boss — she hadn’t checked in with him in advance of the throw-down.

She also passed a challenge on to RTÉ’s Brian Dobson, while McGrath nominated broadcaster Hector, alongside his Independent Dáil colleagues Shane Ross and Mick Wallace.

So far, to our knowledge, no-one’s nominated the Taoiseach. But surely it’s only a matter of time…
