The seminar is the first in a new presidential series.

PRESIDENT MICHAEL D Higgins has officially launched a new seminar inviting young people in Ireland to share their vision for Ireland and how they think that vision could be achieved.

The ‘Being Young and Irish’ seminar is the first in a series of presidential seminars and was launched today at at Áras an Uachtaráin.

“We must seek to build together an active, inclusive citizenship: based on participation, equality, respect for all and the flowering of creativity in all its forms,” the President said at today’s launch.

“A confident people is our hope, a people at ease with itself, a people that grasps the deep meaning of the proverb ‘ní neart go cur le chéile’ – our strength lies in our common weal – our social solidarity.”

Higgins invited young people to submit their views on shaping Ireland’s future online or by post to the Áras. (The campaign also has a Facebook page.) He said they should use whatever media suited them to best express their vision, such as song, narrative or video.

President Higgins will also be hosting a number of regional workshops. Together with submissions, these workshops will culminate in a presidential seminar in the Áras later this year. A final Being Young and Irish report will also be compiled and published by the President.
