POLICE IN NORTHERN Ireland have released one of the men arrested in connection with the murder of German backpacker Inga Maria Hauser 30 years ago.

The 61-year-old man arrested yesterday by detectives from the PSNI serious crime branch has been released on bail pending further police enquiries.

A second man, aged 58, also arrested yesterday, remains in police custody.

The men were arrested in the Loughguile area of Co Antrim early yesterday morning.

‘Vicious assault’

The 18-year-old backpacker went missing after she arrived in Northern Ireland from Scotland on 6 April 1988.

Police believe she was subjected to a vicious assault, which left her with a broken neck, shortly after arriving by ferry at Larne.

Her body was discovered two weeks later in a remote part of Ballypatrick Forest, near Ballycastle, Co Antrim.

Appeal

The PSNI renewed their appeal for information last month on the 30th anniversary of Inga’s death.

On 1 May they said they had received the results of further DNA testing and were “getting closer” to identifying suspects in the case.

Speaking yesterday, Detective Chief Superintendent Raymond Murray renewed his appeal for information.

“If there are any witnesses still out there with any further information which might help police then I would ask them to come forward now and speak to detectives,” he said.
