Investigation launched after man found dead in Mountjoy

The inmate was found unconscious in his cell by prison officers

AN INVESTIGATION HAS been launched after the death of an inmate in Mountjoy prison in Dublin.

The man, who is believed to have been 30 years old, had been in a cell on his own.

He was discovered in an unconscious state by prison officers early on Wednesday morning. An ambulance was called and he was removed to the Mater Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Foul play is not suspected.

The Irish Prison Service is investigating the death. The matter has also been reported to the gardaí who are launching a separate investigation.
