A BABY born in Limerick overnight has become the first baby born in Ireland in 2013.

Newborn Leo Maples was delivered at the Mid-Western Regional Maternity Hospital in Limerick at 12:01am.

He was born to Carmel McNamara and Charles Maples, who are from Co Clare.

The first girl, Lexi Hodnett followed shortly afterwards, born at Cork University Hospital at 12:03am.

The first child born in Dublin in 2013, a girl, was delivered at the National Maternity Hospital in Holles Street at 12:17am.
