15 per cent of Irish workers don’t take their allotted holiday allowance

SOME IRISH EMPLOYEES are not taking their full annual leave entitlement, according to a survey by Viking Office Depot.

The survey found that more than 15 per cent of Irish employees do not take their holidays, with many highlighting the strain of holding down a job in today’s tough economic climate as one of the reasons.

Work commitments that could not be missed was cited by 55 per cent of people as one of the main reasons for not taking their full annual leave. Other reasons included not being able to afford to go on holiday, which 18 per cent said was the reason. While 18 per cent said work pressure and 9 per cent said fear of losing their job were the reasons for not taking their annual break away.

More than 120 people were surveyed, ranging from the age of between 18- 64 years old and were from a range of sectors including retail, hospitality, leisure, construction, agriculture,  healthcare, automotive,  beauty, manufacturing,  financial, technology and sales and marketing.

The survey also asked participants what are the most important characteristics people looked for in a boss. The survey found that 78 per cent of people wanted their boss to have a positive attitude, while 63 per cent wanted them to be understanding. A courteous boss was wanted by 57 per cent of those surveyed.
