AN IRISHMAN FROM the Aran Islands has been shot dead in the US city of Boston.

The man has been named as Ciaran Conneely, 36, originally from the Aran Islands, who was shot dead in the Nahant Avenue area of Dorchester in Boston yesterday morning at around 1am local time (6am Irish Time).

It is reported in the Boston Globe that he was shot in the chest following the annual Irish Heritage Festival.

Conneely had been in the US for the past 12 years and had been living in a three-floor condominium complex on Nahant Avenue.

He is said to have family in the US and had been working in the construction industry.

Neighbours were said to be shocked that such an incident would take place in a usually quiet and trouble-free neighbourhood.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed to TheJournal.ie that it is offering consular assistance to his family both here and in Boston.
