LABOUR’S JOAN BURTON has been elected on the first count in Dublin West.

Topping the poll with 9,627 votes, her 1000+ surplus will now be distributed.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio One after the result was called, Burton thanked her supporters and said Labour could be in the hunt of the final seat in that constituency.

Fine Gael’s Leo Varadkar was less than 200 votes short of the 8,495 quota, while Fianna Fáil’s Brian Lenihan polled fourth in the four seat constituency on the first count.

Of the 42,799 votes cast in Dublin West, 327 were invalid.
