TODAY MARKS THE first anniversary of the death of Cork student, Karen Buckley.

A special memorial is due to be held in Scotland today at Glasgow Caledonian University.

The Irish nurse was abducted and killed on 12 April 2015, after she vanished following a night out in the Sanctuary nightclub in Glasgow.

Alexander Pacteau, who was sentenced to 23 years for her murder, attempted to strangle Karen before hitting her repeatedly with a heavy spanner and then hiding her body on a farm.

Karen had only just moved from Cork to Glasgow at the start of this year, to take up a course at Glasgow Caledonian University.

Pacteau pled guilty to the murder and dropped his conviction appeal in December of last year.

Last August, the Buckley family released a photo of Karen’s bedroom at their home in Mourneabbey. The photo showed a young woman’s room – a brightly-coloured space, complete with cuddly toys and beauty products.

The bed is under a sea of letters, cards, and notes of well wishes and sympathy.

Another memorial is due to be held at her hometown of Mourneabbey in Cork on Friday.
