German tourists boost passenger numbers at Knock Airport

Over 85,000 passengers passed through the airport last month with numbers travelling to popular sun destinations also up.

IRELAND WEST AIRPORT Knock saw its second busiest month in its 28-year history last month with over 85,000 passengers passing through.

More than 61,000 passengers travelled on flights to and from the UK in August – a 5 per cent rise on the same period last year. The airport also saw a major increase in the number of German visitors to the west of Ireland last month with numbers on the Lufthansa weekly service from Dusseldorf increasing by some 67 per cent.

Despite our own good weather in recent weeks, there was also a rise of 4 per cent in numbers travelling to popular European sun destinations such as Malaga, Tenerife, Barcelona, Alicante and Milan.

“This is a positive development for both the airport and tourism interests in the region and highlights the important role the airport and our airline partners plays in delivering low cost, convenient, direct access to the heart of the west and North West of Ireland,” Joe Gilmore, managing director of the airport said.
