A FIRE HAS destroyed a teaching prefab at a Galway primary school  in what gardaí say is being investigated as a case of possible criminal damage.

The fire broke out at the building in Gaelscoil Mhic Amhlaigh in Knocknacarra in Galway city at about 6pm yesterday evening.

Gardaí and local fire services both attended the scene.

The fire began in the playground where it seems a soft, rubberised surface for children to play on was set alight.

The flames then spread to a nearby prefab which acts as a pre-school building.

No injuries have been reported, although a Garda spokesperson confirmed that the building itself was destroyed.

The school itself said in a statement: “No comment will be made on this matter as it is now in the hands of the gardaí”.
