Irish naval ship rescues over 100 people from the Mediterranean

The bodies of two females were also recovered.

IRISH NAVY SHIP the LÉ Róisín has rescued more than 100 people from the Mediterranean.

The Defence Forces confirmed that, following a request from the Italian Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre this morning, the ship located and rescued 111 people from a long rubber vessel located 37 nautical miles north west of Tripoli.

The bodies of two females were also recovered.

The rescue started at 6.50am and all people were on board by 9.40am. They are now receiving food, water and medical treatment where required.

The ship is now going to the Port of Lampedusa where the people will be “transferred over to Italian authorities”, according to a statement.

The LÉ Róisín has rescued 782 people to date, excluding today’s figures.

The ship departed Naval Service Headquarters in Haulbowline, Cork, on 2 May to assist the Italian authorities in humanitarian search and rescue operations in the Mediterranean which began on 11 May.
