Lowry to face censure motion today over Moriarty tribunal findings

The move comes following agreement by all four major parties in the Dáil.

A CENSURE MOTION against Independent TD Michael Lowry will be adopted without debate in the Dáil this morning.

The motion will call on Lowry to resign voluntarily following the publication of the Moriarty report which found that the former communications minister influenced the decision to award Ireland’s second mobile phone licence to Denis O’Brien’s Esat Digifone.

The move comes following a meeting of party whips last night in which all four major parties agreed to back the motion which had been proposed by Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil.

It will be passed either unanimously or, if Lowry and enough other TDs call a division, it will be passed by an overwhelming majority.

Lowry himself has rejected the findings of Judge Moriarty following a 14-year tribunal.

He said that in time the findings would be exposed as a scandal of “truly epic proportions,” RTÉ reports.

He has so far refused calls for him to resign.
