A MAN WHO was found dead in Dublin today was previously known to homeless services, but had not engaged with them since 2011.

It is understood that the man – aged in his 50s – was found in a sleeping bag and that it is a known area for people to sleep rough.

The body was found next to the Bike Yard, just off Parnell Street – close to the Cineworld cinema and a number of language schools.

In a statement, the Dublin Regional Homeless Executive – which manages homeless services in the city – said that the man had been known to homeless services, but had not been in contact with them since 2011.

“The Dublin Region Homeless Executive has become aware of the sad passing of an individual this morning close to Parnell Street and, on behalf of the four Dublin local authorities, would like to express our condolences to the family and friends of the individual,” a spokesperson said.

“While the individual has not been in contact with homeless services or with the Housing First team since 2011, and, it is understood that he may have been living outside Dublin since that time, there is a need to maintain confidentiality and sensitivity until the family can be notified.

The DRHE will not be making any additional comment in relation to this individual at this time.

A garda van, five gardaí and members of the emergency services were at the scene this morning.

The body was at about 10.15am.

The area has been preserved for examination.
