A COUNCIL WORKER has died in a three-vehicle collision in Sligo.

Gardaí in Ballymote are investigating the crash, which happened on the N4 about a mile South of Castlebaldwin at around 11.40am today.

A man in his 60s was killed when he was struck by a truck as he was cutting hedges.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body has since been removed to Sligo Regional Hospital.

A man in his 50s was also airlifted to University College Hospital Galway – and two other men were taken to Sligo Regional Hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor Eamon Scanlon said he had known the man who died for 20 years.

The whole community is shocked. It is such a tragedy, such a freak accident.

“He was a good family man and a good community man … He was a good worker.”

Scanlon said the community wished to send its deepest sympathies to the man’s family.

The stretch of road was temporarily closed for forensic tests.

Gardaí have appealed for any witnesses to contact Ballymote Garda Station on 071 9189500, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
