Man (45) killed after being hit by car when moving dead horse off the road

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 45-YEAR-OLD man died after being struck by a car in Mayo last night.

A garda spokesperson confirmed to that the man was moving a dead animal off the road when he was struck.

It’s understood he was moving a horse, which had been knocked down earlier, with another person.

It happened at Grallagh, Ballyhaunis at around 11.50pm. Gardaí believe that the man who was knocked down and killed was the owner of the horse.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been removed to Mayo General Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Nobody else was injured in the incident.

The scene of the incident is preserved for examination by garda forensic collision investigators and traffic diversions are in place. The local coroner has been notified.
