Maureen Haughey, the wife of former Taoiseach Charles Haughey, has died

It’s understood that she passed away in hospital this morning after a short illness.

THE WIFE OF former Taoiseach Charles Haughey, Maureen Haughey, has died aged 91.

Haughey was also the daughter of former Taoiseach Sean Lemass.

It’s understood that she passed away in hospital this morning after a short illness.

Her son, Fianna Fáil TD for North Dublin Seán Haughey, sent a tweet this morning confirming the news.

Micheál Martin has released a statement, saying, “On behalf of the entire Fianna Fáil organisation across the country, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to the Haughey and Lemass families on the passing of Maureen Haughey.

As the wife of the late Charles Haughey and daughter of Seán Lemass, Maureen was a wonderfully warm, dignified and intelligent woman. She was a tower of strength to her late husband former Taoiseach Charles Haughey and loving daughter of former Taoiseach Seán Lemass. Throughout her distinguished life she witnessed some of the major turning points in Irish history.

He added, “Maureen was a very active woman and kept a keen interest in the evolution of Irish society. She was a patriot who loved her country and retained a key interest in the development of Irish society.

“Her life was steeped in the cause of Irish republicanism and her family contributed significantly to its advancement. She was a loving and caring mother and our sympathies go to her family, Eimear, Conor, Ciaran, and Seán.”
