Bad Move

Mayor winds up Irish community so much he makes NY Post front page

Blasio was a half hour late and had boycotted the parade last year because he mistakenly thought it excluded LGBT groups.

New York Post New York Post

NEW YORK MAYOR Bill de Blasio really wound up the Irish community in Rockaway, Queens, when he turned up to their St Patrick’s Parade a half an hour late.

When he did eventually get there on Saturday, he only walked about half the parade route – amid a lot of negative reaction from parade goers, Irish Central reports.

Speaking in front of the crowd, he also got the name of the chairman wrong.

Bear in mind he already was not their favourite person before Sunday, having boycotted the parade last year because he thought it barred LGBT groups. He had mixed it up with the Staten Island parade and at the time, the Rockaway community was still in the process of rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy.

It is not hard to see why, as the New York Post reported on its very colourful front page on Sunday morning, people were chanting “Worst mayor ever!” at the parade.

Maybe next year he’ll remember how important punctuality is to the Irish.
