A TRANSATLANTIC JET diverted to Shannon Airport this morning after a passenger became seriously ill.

The British Airways flight BA206 was travelling from Miami to London when a medical emergency was declared at around 5am.

The pilot requested a cardiac ambulance on stand by for the arrival and the Boeing 747 landed at 5.55am. The patient was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment.

A spokesperson for British Airways told, “Our cabin crew cared for an unwell customer on board while the captain requested to land as soon as possible.

The aircraft landed safely in Shannon and the emergency services met the flight to provide medical assistance. The aircraft then continued on to Heathrow and we did all we could to minimise the disruption to our customers onward journeys

This was the fourth diversion at Shannon over the holiday period. A 10-year-old girl who was travelling from Toronto to London died after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest on Christmas eve.
