THE LOW PAY Commission has recommended that the the national minimum wage be increased by 50 cent.

If adopted it would raise the €8.65 hourly rate to €9.15.

However, the Irish Small and Medium Enterprises Association (ISME) said an increase could have substantial knock-on effects for businesses.

Wage expectations

It said the proposed increase will increase false wage expectations across the economy and put small businesses under increased pressure.

The group said it believed the proposal was being used as a “blunt instrument” to tackle poverty.

The Restaurant Association said the increase would cost jobs in the sector.

What do you think? Is it too soon for wage increases? Is the economy ready and can businesses take it? Do workers deserve one now?
