THERE’S NO MISTAKING who Moneygall’s famous relation is – and now there’s going to be a visitor centre in his name.

US President Barack Obama’s relations hail from the small Co Offaly town, and during his 2011 trip to Ireland he called to visit his distant family there.

Just last month a Barack Obama Plaza opened in Moneygall, at a cost of €7m.

The plaza will employ over 70 people and was developed by Pat and Una McDonagh, who are the founding directors of Supermac’s Ireland.

Now comes the next phase in the plaza’s development: the opening of the President Barack Obama Visitor Centre and meetings suite in the Barack Obama Plaza.

It will officially open next Friday, 4 July. Pat McDonagh will give an address at the opening on opportunity in Irish business, which he has titled ‘There is a tide in the affairs of men’.

The Barack Obama Plaza is located at Junction 23 just off the M7, and has a services station and food court.

The visitor centre will commemorate the visit of President Obama and his wife Michelle to Moneygall, as well as focusing on Irish-American history and culture.

Henry Healy, one of Obama’s closest Irish relatives, is the manager of Barack Obama Plaza.
