What we know: Angelina Jolie directs herself and Brad Pitt in a seaside relationship drama. Everyone looks beautiful and sad.

What the critics say:

  • By the Sea’s uncompromising nature is its most admirable asset. It’s a vanity project that’s difficult to love, but alluring to unpack. – The Guardian
  • All we are left with is little more than a dour downer of a film that will leave most moviegoers as cold and indifferent as the characters they have been watching. –

What we know: Lily Tomlin is a bad grandma. She’s out to help her granddaughter who is pregnant.

What the critics say:

  • It’s an artful, funny, endlessly surprising little acting and writing showcase that shows just how far it’s possible for writers to take tired, clichéd characters, by treating them as human beings and caring what goes on underneath the surface of the easy jokes. – AV Club
  • The glory of Tomlin’s performance lies in its beguiling mix of obnoxiousness and sweetness. – The Independent

What the critics say:

  • Reviews for the film, which is released on Saturday, are still under embargo. Read into that what you will.
