4 events for... National Drawing Day (even if you're not the artistic type)

Sharpen those pencils.

WHETHER YOU’RE forever sketching something, or your drawing skills only go as far as scribbling on a sheet of paper when you’re on the phone, there’s sure to be an event this National Drawing Day (this Saturday, 18 May) for you.

From drawing sculptures around the capital to fabric screen-printing, here are four events that will help you explore your artistic side…

1. Sketching tour at the National Gallery of Ireland

When: 18 May, 12:30-1:15pm

Where: National Gallery of Ireland, Merrion Square West, Dublin 2

Take a free tour of the gallery’s collections and architecture while sketching as you go. All materials are provided and no experience is needed.

2. Drawing the Everyday at Highlanes Gallery

When: 18 May, 10:30am-1:30pm (drop-ins welcome)

Where: Highlanes Gallery, 36 St Laurence Street, Drogheda, Co Louth

Presented by artist Dorothy Smith, this event will focus on the Drogheda streetscape and tie in with the current exhibition of images of the town in the gallery. While the event is aimed at adults, children are also welcome. Materials will be provided, although attendees can bring their own if they wish.

3. Drawing Dublin

Where: Summer House, St Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2

As well as drawing sculptures around Dublin, Drawing Dublin attendees will also learn about the history of each statue as they stroll through St Stephen’s Green, Merrion Square, The Natural History Museum and more.

4. The Big Draw at the National Design & Craft Gallery

When: 18 May, 11am-3pm

Where: National Design & Craft Gallery, Castle Yard, Co Kilkenny

There are a number of workshops taking place at the National Design & Craft Gallery to mark National Drawing Day, including paper-making with embossing techniques, perspective drawing and fabric screen-printing.
