The beast from the east

What happens if you have to cancel your NCT or driving test due to The Beast?

What if you have to be on the road?

WITH THE BEAST From The East set to hit Ireland in the coming days, many motorists will be wary of taking to the roads.

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) says the snow showers and icy conditions will make the roads treacherous for motorists from today on.

The RSA is asking drivers to take the time now to ensure their vehicle is roadworthy and ready for these conditions.

But what if you are supposed to be on the roads?

If you have an NCT exam or driving test, here’s what you need to know.

Applus Car Testing Service, which runs the NCT, says that if an NCT centre is badly affected by the weather, cancellations or reschedules will be free.

“We are currently monitoring the situation and following the advice of Met Eireann. At this point and time all NCTS Centres are fully operational and we will monitor the situation on a centre by centre basis. Centres will endeavour to remain open however, customers who have concerns about travelling to their local NCT centre for an appointment should not do so.

“Cancellation/rearrangement fees will be waived for centres severely affected by the weather. We would ask customers to regularly check www.ncts.ie for more information and updates on centres that are closed.”

For those set to take their driving test, the RSA says that anyone who feels it is unsafe to travel can rearrange their test free of charge.

“Due to the severe weather conditions forecast for Ireland, it is likely that some driving tests may be cancelled this week. Where this occurs, a test will be rearranged for these candidates free of charge. As this information cannot be known until the morning of these tests, we would advise candidates to keep an eye on this webpage as information will be updated regarding areas where tests may be postponed as it becomes available.

“If anyone has any further queries on their driving test and the weather conditions, they can contact the RSA on 1890 40 60 40. If weather conditions are bad where you are, and you feel it is unsafe to travel, you can contact us on 1890 40 60 40 to cancel your test and a further test will be arranged free of charge.”

A polar vortex from Siberia, referred to as “the Beast from the East”, is expected to bring heavy snowfall and blizzard conditions tomorrow and Friday.
