AN EXTRA 800 gardaí are due to be recruited next year, on foot of yesterday’s Budget.

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe said the Government is committed to a five-year reform and investment plan for An Garda Síochána.

The first recruitment drive since the recession began in December 2013 and some 20,000 people applied for those first 300 positions. The most recent recruitment competition closed two weeks ago and just over 5,000 applications were received.

The Garda Representative Association has four strike days planned next month over its pay dispute with the government. Morale is also low due to ongoing controversies surrounding the force, including recent revelations by whistleblowers.

We want to know: Would you consider becoming a Garda?
