A GARDA investigation into allegations that a tyre on the campaign car of presidential election candidate Dana Rosemary Scallon may have been deliberately cut has found no evidence of criminal damage to the tyre.
The tyre blew out as Dana travelled back to Dublin last Tuesday with her husband and brother after campaigning in Leitrim. No one was injured in the incident and no damage was caused to the vehicle.
Speaking to TheJournal.ie today, Dana’s husband Damien, who was driving the car at the time of the incident, said that the tyre is being sent to England for further evaluation, but they hope it will uncover “nothing sinister”.
Damien Scallon said the independent candidate remains “very optimistic” ahead of Thursday’s vote.
“She’s never done very well in the polls,” he said of her performance in opinion polls throughout the campaign. “But we’re just keeping going and feel very optimistic.”
The latest opinion poll, an Ipsos/MRBI poll for today’s Irish Times, put Dana in last place among the seven candidates with 3 per cent of support.
