DAVID NORRIS HAS said that he will not bring a spouse into Áras an Uachtaráin if elected President of Ireland.

In an interview with TodayFM’s Last Word programme this evening, the independent presidential candidate, who is gay, said that he was not currently in a relationship with anyone.

He added that if he were elected there would not be any spouse joining him in the Phoenix Park.

I’m not in a civil partnership, there is no spouse, there will not be a spouse in Áras an Uachtaráin.

In a wide-ranging interview with host Matt Cooper he also addressed a frontpage editorial in today’s Irish Daily Star which carries the headline: “Norris A Pain In The Aras”.

The editorial criticises the independent senator’s refusal to publish all the letters appealing for clemency that he wrote on behalf of his former partner Ezra Nawi who was convicted of the statutory rape of a 15-year-old boy in 1995.

The senator said it was up to the paper to “decide if it was tasteful or not,” adding:

I’m not going to attack any newspaper, the public will judge their standards. I am not going to attack any journalist, I never have and I never will.
