A NURSE HAS been attacked at Wheatfield prison by inmate Jeffrey Dumbrell.

TheJournal.ie understands that the female nurse was punched in the head by the prisoner.

It happened just before 11 o’clock this morning.

A spokesperson for the Irish Prison Service said, “The nurse was in a cell when she was assaulted in an unprovoked attack.

“Prison officers were present but the prisoner got around the staff. The matter is now under investigation.”

The nurse is currently in hospital being treated for her injuries.

It’s understood that Dumbrell was suppose to be in Portlaoise Prison but a deal was struck for his transfer to Wheatfield.

Jeffrey Dumbrell (33) and his brother Warren were jailed for life in February 2011 after being convicted of the murder of Christopher Cawley at Tyrone Place flats in Inchicore in 2006.

During the trial, the court heard that one of the Dumbrells told Cawley’s daughter, ‘Your Daddy’s gone now’

The retired lead investigator in the case, Detective Superintendent PJ Browne described the Dumbrell brothers as ‘thugs’ and said the world is a safer place with them behind bars.

This latest assault comes after a spate of violent attacks in prisons in recent weeks.

On Saturday night a Cork prisoner was stabbed to death over an argument about a remote control.

Earlier this month at the Prison Officers Association’s Annual Conference the POA called for the physical safety of it’s members to be a top priority.
