HAIL IS A common weather phenomenon in Oklahoma.

But the state’s stones are nothing like the pea-sized balls we’re used to in Ireland. In 2010, a hail storm devastated Oklahoma City, causing about a billion dollars in damages to homes, vehicles and crops.

Hailstones can be as big as baseballs or grapefruits, as Joe Murray’s photo reveals.

His Ireland-based cousin, Andrea Kavanagh, sent this shot of a hailstone he found at the back of his house ahead of Monday’s tornado.
