RECORDS RELEASED UNDER the Freedom of Information act have revealed that Ireland’s universities and Dublin Institute of Technology pay 1001 staff members more than €100,000 a year.

Mark Tighe in The Sunday Times (subscription required) reports that the highest paid university employee earns €263,602 working at UCD. Des Fitzgerald, vice-president for research, is one of almost ten per cent of UCD staff who earn six figures.

A UCD spokesperson has told the paper that 40 per cent of its income comes from sources other than public funds.

University College Cork, on less than five per cent, has the lowest number of staff on higher than €100,000. However the college has refused to release details of 26 employees on the upper levels of the pay scale at UCC.

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin said on Wednesday that future appointments to the higher positions in the public service will face salary caps of €200,000.
