TWENTY ONE PEOPLE have been arrested in a major garda operation targeting organised crime in Dublin.

Gardaí have been carrying out searches around Dublin since this morning as part of Operation Wireless, which was set up by Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan to target specific people involved in organised crime.

More than 50 searches were carried out today as part of the operation.

Five people – four men and one woman – were arrested earlier today on foot of European arrest warrants.

Two of those arrested are being held in Blanchardstown Garda station while the other three are being held in Kilmainham, Bridewell and Ashbourne stations.

The operation is ongoing and it is believed that there may be more arrests later today.

The searches were carried out by a number of garda units, including the Criminal Assets Bureau, the National Drug Unit and the Garda Bureau of Fraud Investigation.
