Two Limerick hospitals account for 60pc of outpatients waiting over four years

OVER 4,000 outpatients have been waiting over four years at the Mid-Western Regional Orthopaedic Hospital in Croom, Co Limerick, figures from the end of January have revealed.

The Department of Health’s Patient Treatment Register lists 10,347 outpatients as being on outpatient waiting lists at the hospital. 4,109 (39.7 per cent) have been waiting more than four years.

The Mid-Western Regional Hospital, in Dooradoyle, Co Limerick, has the second highest number, with 1,716 outpatients waiting over four years.

In third place is Waterford Regional Hospital, with 1,086 patients.

Dublin’s Tallaght hospital has 876 outpatients waiting over four years.

In total, there are 9,784 outpatients throughout the country that have been waiting more than four years for outpatient consultation, with a further 8,989 outpatients waiting between three and four years.

The total number on outpatients, regardless of their waiting time, was 386,643.

The Minister for Health, Dr James Reilly, has set the end of this year as the target by which no outpatients will be waiting more than one year before receiving treatment.
