Junior Cert results: how did the country do?

Nearly 60,000 students will receive their Junior Certificate results today. Here’s how they did.

THIS MORNING NEARLY 60,000 15- and 16-year-olds will wake up feeling the nerves of Junior Cert results day.

Across the country, 59,823 students will either go to their schools or go online and get their grades. Overall, the number sitting the exams is up 1.7 per cent, but the number re-entering education is down by the same amount.

In all three core subjects: English, Irish and Maths, over 10 per cent of candidates received A grades in the Higher level paper. That equates to over 2,700 As in Irish, 4,500 in English and over 3,000 Higher Level As in Maths.

In the Ordinary papers of the three, the numbers are roughly the same, with 12.2 per cent As in Irish, 10.7 per cent in English and 12.5 per cent in Maths.

Higher level Typewriting saw the highest percentage of As, with 34.1 of the 85 students who sat the exam claiming full marks. In fact, nobody who sat the exam failed.

The same could not be said for students sitting Ordinary level Classical Studies, however. One in five of the 89 students who took the test, 20.2 per cent, received a failing grade.

In foreign languages, there strong performances in French, German, Spanish and Italian, as over 10 per cent of students scored As in Higher level papers.
