Photos: Protests take place around the country over CervicalCheck controversy

PEOPLE ACROSS THE country turned out to protest today in support of women affected by the CervicalCheck controversy.

Organised by Standing4Women, events took place in Cork, Cavan, Kildare, Kerry, Leitrim and elsewhere, with a large gathering outside the Dáil in Dublin.

An ongoing audit by the HSE into issues with the Cervical Check screening programme has identified 209 women where their smear test could have provided a different result. Of these, 18 of the women have since died.

On its Facebook page, the group Standing4Women said that its aim is to “help the women who are suffering because of the CervicalCheck scandal”.

“They are numerous,” it said. “We want acknowledgement from the people in power that they will tell us the truth… we will not be silenced. We are here and we are fighting. Hear us roar.”

Attendees at today’s protest at Leinster House included TDs Bríd Smith, Alan Kelly, Catherine Murphy and Mary Lou McDonald.

That rally was addressed by Emma Mhic Mhathúna, who has since been diagnosed with terminal cancer as one of the women affected.

Earlier today, the High Court heard that hat the HSE has yet to admit full liability regarding the botched cervical smear results given Mhic Mhathúna.
