ONE OF NINTENDO’S flagship titles will appear on iPhone and Android next year and will use the real-world as its setting.

Pokémon Go is a spiritual sequel to the Google game Ingress, an augmented reality location game where you battle players in the real-world.

In this version, players are allowed track, capture, battle and train Pokémon in real-world settings.

That means that Pokémon can appear anywhere on the streets, fields and other locations around the world while players can battle them against each other.

The game will also work with a Bluetooth-powered device called Pokémon Go Plus, which can be pinned onto a player’s clothing or worn on the wrist. The device has an LED-light and vibration function to alert players that something important or interesting is happening nearby.

It’s not required to play the game but the makers say it would reduce the amount of time players spend opening the game on their smartphone.

The game is a joint effort between Nintendo and the developers of Ingress Niantic. Nianic was previously a startup company within Google, but announced it’s now working as an independent company and would work with new partners.

Earlier this year, Nintendo announced it would be moving into smartphone gaming by announcing a partnership with one of Japan’s biggest mobile gaming companies. While many were expecting it to move away from consoles entirely, it also announced that it was working on a next-generation console called NX.

Only a brief glimpse of footage was shown, but if you want an idea of the direction Nintendo is taking this, it has an over the top trailer to help get you in the mood.

The game will be a free download with in-app purchases and will launch in 2016.
