Poll: Do you want to see a Presidential election this year?

Michael D Higgins hasn’t clarified his intentions yet.
Jun 27th 2018, 8:58 AM 27,851 100

A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION is due to be held in October but if no candidates are put forward Michael D Higgins could go forward for a second term without an election.

Higgins can nominate himself for re-election and has said he will make his intentions clear next month. Challengers need the backing of either 20 TDs or senators, or, alternatively, four councils to contest the race.

In the latest development Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin confirmed yesterday that his party will not be fielding a candidate and threw his support behind Higgins.

Independent senator Gerard Craughwell has said he’ll seek a nomination to force an election in order to ensure Higgins isn’t allowed a free run.

We’re asking: Do you want to see a Presidential election this year?

Poll Results:

No (7166)
Yes (4152)
No interest/no opinion (804)
I'm not sure (435)
