Instead there should be a healthier 6-year system based on one curve towards a Leaving Cert based on both exams and continuous assessment. This would solve several problems. Firstly, and most importantly, it would prevent the LC from being such a “learn and regurgitate” affair as a 6-year system could focus more on teaching to understand rather than teaching to know something verbatim. Secondly, it would dispel the shameful stress placed on ca. 15-year-olds at a time when they don’t need it and can’t cope with it. Thirdly, and most obviously, it would save the expense of devising papers, supervising papers, and correcting papers which, in the end, are absolutely worthless in today’s Ireland. If students still want to leave school at 15/16 then there should be an optional certificate to make this possible but, otherwise, there is no sense in forcing students through a process which is not necessary and which, actually, is counter-productive to the original intent and purpose of what education should be. ]]>

1………….Continual assessment

2………….Maths ; too much of a gap between pass and honours paper ( so many people drop back)

3………….Teachers should be qualified to teach the subject ( as in yesterdays paper so many of our maths teachers have no degree in maths…( I rest my case)

4…………..Great idea what I heard yesterday about government proposing to have literacy workshops during the summer months for children who need extra help…….wont be like school,,,more informal but pilot schemes have have wonderful success so far.

5……………Heard on the radio of a new idea to get newly qualified teachers, retired teachers, people who love Irish language to teach Irish through a new programme nationwide…..Irish teaching in our schools has not been a success to date and has to be reviewed… ]]>

Many other countries like Germany use these kind of systems, I don’t understand why we can’t give it a go. ]]>

Alos, we need to sort out our primary education and concentrate on teaching the basics trather than schools worrying about fancy whiteboards….. ]]>
