Poll: Should Greece have held that referendum?

THIS WEEK GREEK Prime Minister George Papandreou did a swift u-turn in the wake of his announcement of a referendum on a second bailout agreement for the country.

Initially he said that he wanted to put the issue to the Greek people, saying “we trust them. We believe in their opinion”. He received the backing of the cabinet, and there was talk of the referendum happening in December.

The planned vote threatened to unravel a deal that had been reached aimed at resolving the eurozone crisis.

France and Germany responded, warning Papandreou that the referendum would determine whether or not Greece could stay within the euro, while the Greek Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos refused to support the idea of putting a vote to the people.

Papandreou yesterday scrapped plans for a referendum, and agreed to make way for a coalition government.
