A SUGGESTION TO tax lottery winnings of more than half a million euro was dismissed by the Minister for Finance yesterday.

The idea was put to Michael Noonan by Kerry South TD Brendan Griffin who said such a move would create a “win-win” situation for the jackpot winner and the State.

Griffin suggested that a tax on the 260 National Lottery draws which have prizes of more than €500k each year could generate significant revenue for the State.

Noonan rejected the idea, stating the “successful model” already funds health, sporting and educational services and so should be allowed to operate as is.

What do you think? Should Lotto winnings of more than €500,000 be subject to tax?
