SECONDARY SCHOOLS will be able to offer physical education as an exam subject for the Junior Certificate in the coming years, according to education minister Ruairí Quinn.

The revised teaching framework for the junior cycle provides that students “should be able to participate in physical activity confidently and competently”, and schools will be able to offer courses with assessment through a “portfolio” of physical activities.

Many have long called for PE to be given formal acknowledgement in the exam system, but some – including Fine Gael senator Fidelma Healy-Eames – have called for the subject to be extended to Leaving Cert level.

Today we’re wondering where you stand – should PE be an exam subject for the Leaving Cert?

Poll Results:

Yes (1795)
No - it shouldn't be an exam subject at all (1021)
No - but it should be for the Junior (306)
I don't know (85)
