The Minister for Health has said he would consider banning smoking in private vehicles. How would you react?

THE HEALTH MINISTER, James Reilly, has said he would consider extending the smoking ban – by banning smoking in cars carrying passengers under the age of 16.

In response to a parliamentary question, Reilly said people had a responsibility “for the welfare of children” and to ensure that they were not exposed to damaging second-hand smoke.

The original smoking ban, introduced in 2004, already applies to the likes of taxis and has been considered a global success – but some may consider a ban on smoking in a private vehicle as a move that impinges on private liberties.

So, today we want to know: would you favour a ban on smoking in private cars?

Poll Results:

Yes, when cars are carrying children (1039)
No, it's a motorist's right to smoke (693)
Yes, I support a blanket ban (515)
I don't know (25)
