SENATOR DAVID NORRIS said on Friday he believed his election campaign would hit a serious snag as it emerged he had written to Israeli courts seeking clemency for a friend and former partner convicted of having sex with an underage teenage boy.

Norris now needs the backing of eight Oireachtas members to meet the 20-member quota for election nomination.

Two other Independent candidates have already secured the backing of four local authorities needed for a nomination. Seán Gallagher and Mary Davis both have enough council support to get their names onto the ballot.

Gay Mitchell, who has also been performing strongly in public opinion polls of candidates, was selected as Fine Gael’s nominee last month, while Labour was the first party to chose its candidate, Michael D Higgins, back in June. Neither Fianna Fáil or Sinn Féin has declared a candidate yet.

The date of the election has been announced as 27 October. But if you could vote today, which of the following five would you vote for?

Poll Results:

David Norris (1796)
None of the above (816)
Michael D Higgins (761)
Mary Davis (420)
Seán Gallagher (380)
Gay Mitchell (290)
