New Mayo power plant to create 350 jobs

THE LARGEST BIOMASS power station in the country is to be built in Co Mayo.

The plans by Mayo Renewable Power were announced today by Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

Building will begin this month with around 350 jobs to be created during the two year construction phase.

It will be built at the old Ashai site in Killala and will involve an investment of €180 million.

When in operation up to 30 people will be employed full-time at the plant and over 100 people will be employed indirectly in growing, harvesting, transport and other ancillary services associated with the plant.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny made the announcement today, saying, “This investment is a vote of confidence in the Irish economy and is part of the recovery that is beginning to spread to every region of Ireland.”

The project is being financed by Ulster Bank, AIB and Barclays and the plant is expected to be up and running by 2017.

Crotty, President of Weichert Enterprise and Chairman of Mayo Renewable Power said: “This financing marks another important milestone in the construction of Mayo Renewable Power’s plant and facilities which will provide renewable, sustainable and innovative energy to Ireland’s electricity grid.”
